CT - Computed Tomography
A computerized axial tomography (CT or CAT) scan is a simple, non-invasive procedure that studies the interior workings of your body by visually “slicing” it into sections. A CT scan allows a physician to specifically observe the targeted area, while a normal X-ray does not show images in detail. Although it can be used in many parts of the body, a CT scan is particularly helpful in diagnosing and monitoring diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spine), and the chest and abdomen.
During certain procedures the patient is injected with a contrast agent through an IV while lying horizontally on the bed of the CT scanner. As the patient passes through the donut-shaped apparatus, there may be a clicking noise throughout the exam. A CT is painless, some patients actually report sleeping through the procedure.
Preparation for exam:
Depending on the area to be examined, preparation varies. Please check with the facility prior to your appointment. If you are or think you might be pregnant, please inform your technologist before your procedure
Length of exam:
Depending on the exam, length can vary from 15 - 30 minutes.
After your exam:
A Diversified Radiologist will interpret your images and a report will be sent to your referring physician, within 24 hours of your test.
